10 Effective Ways to Unblock Your Sink and Bath
Every household in Blackpool and the Fylde Coast will face a blocked drain sooner or later. Whether it’s a buildup of hair and soap scum in the family bathroom or fats and oils in the kitchen, a slow-draining sink is a frustration that quickly turns into a flood risk.
Before you call out the professionals, there are several DIY methods you can try to get things moving again. Here is our expert guide to the 10 best ways to unblock your sink and bath.
1. The “Hanger Hook” Method
Straighten out a wire coat hanger but leave a small hook at one end. Carefully feed it past the drain cover to “fish” for hair clumps. This is particularly effective for baths and showers where hair sits just below the surface. Remember: Always pull the gunk out; never push it further down.
2. The Natural Fizz: Baking Soda & Vinegar
A safer alternative to harsh store-bought chemicals. Mix 1/3 cup of baking soda with 1/3 cup of vinegar. Pour it down immediately while it’s fizzing. The chemical reaction helps break down grime and organic matter. Leave for an hour (or overnight) before flushing with hot water.
3. The Wet & Dry Vacuum
If you have a “shop-vac” capable of suctioning liquids, it can be a powerhouse for drainage. Create the tightest seal possible over the plughole (an old plunger head can help here) and set the vacuum to its highest setting. It can often draw the clog up and out of the pipe entirely.
4. Boiling Water (The Simplest Fix)
For kitchen sinks blocked by congealed fats, boiling water is often all you need. Pour a full kettle down in two or three stages, allowing the heat to melt the grease for several seconds between pours. Note: Do not use boiling water on PVC pipes if you suspect a leak, as it can soften joints.
5. Soda Crystals (The Safer Chemical)
Instead of dangerous caustic soda, use a large pack of Soda Crystals. Pour them down the drain followed by boiling water. This is highly effective at dissolving grease in kitchen sinks and is much kinder to your plumbing and the environment.
6. Cleaning the U-Bend (The Trap)
Most bathroom blockages happen in the “U-bend” directly under the sink. Place a bucket underneath, unscrew the slip nuts by hand or with a wrench, and remove the pipe. Clear out the debris, rinse with soapy water, and replace. This solves 90% of simple sink clogs.
7. The Plumber’s Snake (Drain Auger)
A drain snake is a flexible coil of wire that can navigate the bends in your pipework. Feed it in until you feel resistance, then twist to “hook” the blockage and pull it out. It’s the closest thing to professional equipment you can buy at a hardware store.
8. Salt and Baking Soda
Mix 1/2 cup of table salt with 1/2 cup of baking soda and pour it down the drain. Let it sit for 20 minutes, then flush with boiling water. The abrasive nature of the salt combined with the cleaning power of the soda can scrub the internal walls of the pipe.
9. Biological Drain Cleaners
If you have a recurring slow drain, use a biological cleaner that contains enzymes. These “eat” the organic matter (hair and food) without damaging your pipes. It takes longer (usually overnight), but it is the best long-term maintenance tip.
10. The “Weight of Water” Pressure
For baths, try the baking soda and vinegar mix (Tip 2), then plug the bath and fill it with several inches of water. Removing the plug creates a “slug” of water weight that, combined with a few thrusts of a plunger, can use gravity to force a loosened blockage through.
